Charged with such an endeavour, scientists used the latest technology to burrow into a parallel dimension and drain the energy from it. Unfortunately, these tears in the space/time fabric allowed creatures from the other world to burst through, laying waste to entire cities. Humanity's survival lay in the hands of ten Detonators - massive, fully armed war-suits, capable of defeating the monsters. With the threat averted, the rich decided to leave Earth altogether and set up clean, pollution-free colonies, using their former home as a dumpsite for their waste.
